It's Not Too Late to File a VA Disability Claim

Hello, and welcome to this week's newsletter! This week's topic is one we feel strongly about at earned.vet. Too many veterans are leaving benefits on the table because they assume they waited too long to file a disability claim. If that sounds familiar, keep reading — because in most cases, it's not too late. Here's what you should know.

You Can Still File a VA Disability Claim — Even Years Later

If you left the military without filing a disability claim, you're not too late.

Many veterans assume the window has closed — that too much time has passed, that they waited too long, or that they should have filed right after discharge. That belief stops a lot of people from ever submitting a claim. And in most cases, it's simply not true.

The VA does not impose a general deadline for filing a disability claim. Veterans can apply months, years, or even decades after leaving service — as long as there's evidence connecting a current condition to their time in the military.

What the VA is actually looking for

Every claim comes down to one question: is this condition connected to your service?

That connection can be established through medical records, service treatment records, personal statements, buddy statements from people who knew you during or after service, or a medical opinion. You don't need all of these — you need enough to make the case.

Why filing sooner still matters

There's no deadline to file, but the date you file does matter. In most cases, your effective date — the date your benefits begin if approved — is tied to when the VA receives your claim. That means every month you wait is potentially a month of benefits you won't be able to recover.

If you think a condition might be connected to your service, filing sooner locks in that date, even if it takes time to gather the rest of your evidence.

What to do next

You don't have to have everything figured out before you file. Start by learning what conditions may qualify, gather what records you have, and reach out for help if you need it. That's what EARNED.vet is here for.
