Does My VA Disability Rating Affect My Spouse's Benefits?

Apr 23, 2026
Connect

A VA disability rating can affect more than monthly compensation. In some cases, it may also connect to benefits that involve a veteran’s spouse or dependents.

This week focuses on how VA disability ratings can impact additional compensation and dependent-related benefits.

Additional Monthly Compensation for Dependents

Veterans with a combined disability rating of 30% or higher may be eligible for additional monthly compensation for qualifying dependents, including a spouse, children, or dependent parents.

This amount is added to the veteran’s monthly disability payment and increases as the disability rating increases.

For 2026, dependent spouse compensation ranges from approximately $65 at the 30% rating level up to $219.59 at the 100% rating level.

To receive this benefit, the veteran must report dependents to the VA by filing VA Form 21-686c (Declaration of Status of Dependents). If this is not filed, dependent compensation may not be applied.

Healthcare Coverage Through CHAMPVA (Important Benefit)

Spouses of veterans with a permanent 100% disability rating or permanent TDIU classification may qualify for healthcare coverage through the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs, known as CHAMPVA.

CHAMPVA is a healthcare program that helps cover medical costs for eligible spouses and dependents. It is separate from TRICARE and private insurance programs.

Eligibility is not automatic. The veteran must have a permanent qualifying disability status, and the spouse must meet all program requirements.

Educational Assistance Through DEA (Chapter 35)

Spouses of veterans with a permanent 100% disability rating or permanent TDIU classification may also be eligible for educational benefits through the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance program (DEA).

This program may provide monthly payments for approved education or training programs, including college, vocational school, apprenticeships, and job training.

What to Know

Dependent-related benefits are often missed when:

  • Dependents are not properly added to VA records
  • Veterans are unaware additional compensation exists at certain rating levels
  • Families are not informed about separate benefit programs tied to disability status

Key Takeaway

VA disability ratings can impact more than just monthly compensation. In some cases, they may also affect what benefits are available to a spouse or dependents—but only if the proper steps and documentation are in place.
