Are You Getting the VA Disability Rating You Actually Deserve?

Hello, and welcome back to this week's newsletter. This week we're talking about something that affects nearly every veteran who has filed a disability claim — the question of whether your rating truly reflects the impact your conditions have on your life. A lot of veterans are underrated and don't know it. Here's what to look out for.

What Your Disability Rating Actually Means

The VA assigns disability ratings in increments of 10% up to 100%, and that number determines how much monthly compensation you receive. But the rating isn't just about your diagnosis — it's about how your condition affects your ability to function day to day.

Many veterans receive a rating that doesn't fully capture the severity of their condition, either because the evidence wasn't strong enough at the time of filing or because conditions have worsened since the original decision.

You Can Appeal or Reopen Your Claim

If you believe your rating is too low, you're not stuck with it. Veterans have several options including filing a supplemental claim with new evidence, requesting a higher-level review, or appealing to the Board of Veterans Appeals.

Conditions also change over time. If a service-connected condition has gotten worse, you may be eligible for an increased rating — but you have to file for it.

The More You Know, the Better Your Outcome

The VA system is complicated, but veterans who understand how it works tend to get better results. Knowing what evidence matters, what language the VA looks for, and what options are available at each stage of the process can make a real difference in the outcome of a claim.

That's what EARNED.vet is here for — free, straightforward information to help veterans understand the system and make informed decisions about their benefits.

This newsletter is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal or benefits advice.

That's it for this week. If this helped, share it with a veteran who could use it. The more veterans understand this system, the better their outcomes.
