Benefits Available to Families After a Veteran’s Death

When a veteran passes away, their family may be eligible for more than just burial benefits. The VA provides a range of financial, healthcare, education, and housing benefits to help support surviving spouses, children, and in some cases, parents.

Because these benefits are spread across different programs, many families are unaware of what’s available — or assume they don’t qualify. Here’s an overview of the key benefits to know.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

DIC is a tax-free monthly payment available to eligible surviving spouses, children, and sometimes parents of veterans whose death was service-connected.

  • Base monthly payment for a surviving spouse (2026): $1,699.36
  • Additional amounts may apply for dependents or special circumstances
  • Not based on income

This is one of the most significant long-term financial benefits available to survivors.

Survivors Pension

The Survivors Pension is a needs-based monthly benefit for low-income spouses and unmarried dependent children of wartime veterans.

  • Based on income and net worth
  • Payments vary depending on financial need
  • Can be increased with Aid and Attendance or Housebound status

This benefit is designed to provide support when income is limited.

Healthcare Coverage (CHAMPVA)

Eligible surviving spouses and dependents may qualify for healthcare coverage through CHAMPVA if the veteran:

  • Was rated permanently and totally disabled, or
  • Died from a service-connected condition

CHAMPVA helps cover most medically necessary services and can serve as a valuable alternative to private insurance.

Education Benefits (DEA / Chapter 35)

Surviving spouses and dependents may be eligible for education benefits through the Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program.

  • Provides monthly payments for education or training
  • Covers college, trade schools, apprenticeships, and more
  • Up to 36 months of benefits available

These benefits can help families pursue education and career opportunities after a loss.

VA Home Loan Benefits for Surviving Spouses

Some surviving spouses may remain eligible for VA-backed home loans, which can include:

  • No down payment requirements (in many cases)
  • Competitive interest rates
  • No private mortgage insurance (PMI)

Eligibility depends on factors such as whether the veteran’s death was service-connected or if certain conditions are met.

Burial and Memorial Benefits

In addition to the benefits above, families may also receive:

  • Burial in a VA national cemetery
  • Burial allowances and reimbursements
  • Headstones, markers, and burial flags
  • Military funeral honors

These benefits help recognize the veteran’s service and reduce some financial burden.

What to Do Next
  1. Identify Potential Benefits – Review which programs may apply based on the veteran’s service and circumstances
  2. Gather Documentation – DD Form 214, death certificate, and family records
  3. Apply for Key Benefits – Start with DIC or Survivors Pension using VA Form 21P-534EZ
  4. Explore Healthcare and Education Options – Look into CHAMPVA and DEA eligibility
  5. Seek Assistance if Needed – VSOs can help navigate applications at no cost

Many families only learn about one or two of these benefits, leaving others unclaimed. Taking the time to understand what’s available can make a significant difference in long-term financial stability and access to support.
